HEALTHCARE

Rockcastle Hospital and Respiratory Care Center provides healthcare services for Rockcastle County and surrounding areas. The hospital is known for its excellent ventilator care unit and it recently completed a 19 patient bed expansion and Outpatient Services building.

HOUSING

Median house price is well below the national average. Single family homes are readily available throughout the county. Some duplexes and apartments are available in the area, but primarily in Mt. Vernon.

SHOPPING

In the Renfro Valley/ Mt. Vernon area, you will find shops, such as Aunt Polly’s, that sell hand-made crafts. The Valley Antique store on Hwy 25 and the Mini Mall in Mt. Vernon appeal to those looking for something old, unique or just a
great buy.

In historic Mt. Vernon, you will find Cox Hardware that has been a family business since 1907. Walking into their store sends you back in time since the interior has changed very little through the years. Another Main Street business to visit is Hiatt’s 5&10. The charming facade and merchandise in the windows lead tourists and customers in the door and once inside they find interesting gifts and crafts.

RECREATION

Recreational facilities in the area include parks, campgrounds, lakes and museums. Of special interest are Renfro Valley Entertainment Center, Cedar Rapids Country Club Golf Course, Kentucky Music Hall of Fame Museum, the Historic BitterSweet Cabin Village, and Lake Linville. Renfro Valley Entertainment Center, located off I-75 at exit 62, has entertained country music lovers for over 67 years. The Center has a legendary musical line-up of weekly shows and performances by local and national performers. Renfro Valley is a crowd-pleasing favorite stop for tourists and music fans.

Cedar Rapids Country Club Golf Course offers a 9-hole golf course. It is located on Highway 150 and is open to the public.

Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum paints a picture of Kentucky’s musical past. The museum honors Kentucky performers, songwriters, promoters, managers, comedians and others who have made a contribution to the music industry in Kentucky and around the world. Visitors can view various displays of artifacts, instruments, memorabilia, costumes and can even enter a sound booth to sing, play and record their favorite tune. Singing, song writing and instrument workshops are available.

Capturing the historic charm of 1700 Appalachia, the Historic BitterSweet Cabin Village exhibits hand-made crafts and artifacts of this era. The authentic log cabin museum is located off exit 62 of I-75 in Renfro Valley.

Located in the county seat of Mt. Vernon, Lake Linville, with an average depth of 20 feet, covers approximately 274 acres. The lake is filled with a variety of fish including bluegill, largemouth, smallmouth, white and Kentucky bass, catfish and carp. Lake Linville lures the most avid fisherman.

If you are looking for a scenic driving tour, highway 25 has been designated the Wilderness Road Scenic Highway. The Wilderness Road traveled by Daniel Boone and early pioneers passes through Mt. Vernon. In the early Spring, Rockcastle roads come alive with Redbud trees. In the Fall, the changing colored leaves are dramatic with the backdrop of the Rockcastle rocks and hills. If you prefer travel by water, do not miss a canoe trip on the scenic Rockcastle River.
